Twitter for Mac

I’m running the official Twitter 2.0.2 app for Mac. And I must say, its a nice update to Tweetie that was long in coming. However, twitter needs to fix 2 things to make it a great app.

  1. Refresh Rates – My client likes to go into stupid mode for hours or days at a time. If I don’t notice and hit refresh, I simply won’t get updates. While nice for the lack of distraction, its still a bug that’s easy to spot.
  2. Spaces – For the love of god people, spaces!!!! Its one of the killer features of OSX. Yet, you don’t respect it at all. No matter what, I get the damn Twitter app on every space, not just one. I like your app and all, I just don’t like it THAT much.

So Twitter, help a brother out and fix your app.

You’re not a snowflake!

As I was checking in today on the latest tech news, I found out that Twitter has announced that they are building their own data center.

Death to the fail whale they are calling it. Maybe so, but what really got me was this.

Twitter will have full control over network and systems configuration, with a much larger footprint in a building designed specifically around our unique power and cooling needs.

Uh, what?

What could possible be unique to your power and cooling needs opposed to well, ANYONE ELSE RUNNING A FUCKING DATA CENTER?

Sure they have a metric crapton more users than you or I will ever have. But unique cooling and power needs?!?! Bullshit!

Yes you have servers, routers, SAN cabling, racks upon racks of gear. We get it, you’re a big site. But that doesn’t make you suddenly special. Just because you have a lot of cooling and power needs doesn’t make you suddenly unique to the rest of the world.

I work for a company that has several large data centers. We host more companies than I probably even know about. And you know what, we use a LOT of power and cooling. Why you ask, we’re a freaking data center, its what we do.

While building a data center gives you other benefits which you have listed (customization and flexibility), its doesn’t make you special so stop acting like it.

Is this the best you can do?

Seriously CNN, is this the best that you can do?

In case you are wondering why people no longer look to you for news, this is why. Some blowhole closing his twitter account shouldn’t make the front page of

Brain-Twitter project offers hope to paralyzed patients

Many of us are on twitter (@usrlocal), and for the most part, there isn’t a whole lot productive that happens there. Sure, some people are using it for marketing, some are using it to keep up with friends, some are just being stupid. Yes folks, there are some people that literally tell us that they are drinking coffee and reading the paper. Guess what, I don’t freaking care!!!

But this is freaking AWESOME!

Adam Wilson posted two messages on Twitter on April 15. The first one, “GO BADGERS,” might have been sent by any University of Wisconsin-Madison student cheering for the school team.

His second post, 20 minutes later, was a little more unusual: “SPELLING WITH MY BRAIN.”

Wilson, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering, was confirming an announcement he had made two weeks earlier — his lab had developed a way to post messages on Twitter using electrical impulses generated by thought.

That’s right, no keyboards, just a red cap fitted with electrodes that monitor brain activity, hooked up to a computer flashing letters on a screen. Wilson sent the messages by concentrating on the letters he wanted to “type,” then focusing on the word “twit” at the bottom of the screen to post the message.

The development could be a lifeline for people with “locked-in syndrome” — whose brains function normally but who cannot speak or move because of injury or disease.

Yeah, you read that right. Communicating with just your brain, no arms, fingers, legs, pencil in the mouth, just his freaking thoughts. Amazing!

I’m excited to see this sort of innovation happening now.

Twitter Issues

Has anyone else been having a bunch of issues with Twitter as of late? It seems like the service is even more unstable than is has been in the past few months.

My biggest complaint right now, besides it being down a lot, is the profile settings. Yes, I’m _finally_ getting around to setting a profile picture for my @usrlocal account.

Here is what I get when I attempt to upload my image:

Good so far! But then when I got to hit save the final time I get the following:

Uh..NO! My picture of 4KB which is 48×48 is NOT to big!

Here’s the really frustrating part, some people are seeing my new image though I get the error message saying that it didn’t update properly.

WTF Twitter?!?!
