Livestrong

I’m not a health fanatic by any means. I try to eat somewhat healthy, I track my weight like a freak (its the programmer in me) and I work out regularly. May not to the freakish level of some of my co-workers (Example A & B)

One of the recent additions to the iTunes App Store has been a little application called Calorie Tracking from Livestrong.com.

This nice little application will allow you to track your weight, fitness activities and food consumption per day. And it ties back into a livestrong.com account where you have additional tools and fitness information.

First Impressions

Wow! This application is pretty easy to use. The UI is nicely laid out and the food database is pretty extensive. So far, I haven’t found anything that I have eaten that wasn’t in the database. The fitness level activities is a pretty complete database. At least for what I do.

One nice touch in the food database is the applications ability to save recently searched foods before hitting the main server to search for more foods. This speeds up the entry of items that you may have on a regular basis.

Improvements

I only have a few complaints so far with the application. Within the website, you can put certain foods together and save them with a keyword. The issue is, it looks like everyone can save a term and I’m not sure if it is user specific. For example, the breakfast that I put together, didn’t seem to match up when I searched for it. At least, it didn’t expand my OJ and Cheerios into the My Plate appropriately.

Another improvement is that the search occasionally locks up and the app crashes. It seems to recover quickly, but still something that they should be able to hunt down.

Now, they do have a weight goal section:
weight goals

The one thing that I would like to see is that I am at a certain weight today, but I would like to set a goal of say 185 by 3/1/2009 instead of 1 lbs / week. Its a pretty minor thing, still something I’d like to see.

Conclusion

Overall, its a pretty complete application for those that like to workout, track calories simply and work for a certain goal. For someone like me that has never really tracked thier calories, it makes perfect sense. If you are already doing that with another system, it might not make sense to change. But having a calorie, fitness and graphing database at your fingertips, it is worth checking out. Oh, and did I mention its my favorite price…FREE!

Another iPhone Software Update has come out. This one has bug fixes, Map and Email improvements, and the ability to download podcasts over the air.

I’m attempting to download the damn thing, but it is really slow right now. Anyone else having this issue?

Smart Phone

I’ve finally taken the plunge. I have purchased an iPhone.

I have to say, I love the thing. I had exchange rocking with this thing within 3 minutes of getting it home on the wifi network. I had a Sprint service for many many years and they were pretty good to me for the most part. But the fact that they didn’t have the iPhone and the fact that Apple released as SDK for the thing put me over the top.

Some benefits that I have found to the phone have been numerous. The biggest one for me and my current job is the tie in with Exchange 2007. I swear I get my mail faster on the iPhone than I do with my Entourage checking constantly. Calendaring tied in. My contacts I can sync from exchange though I choose to sync from my local contact list.

I surprisingly don’t use the iPod part of it as much as I thought I would. I guess I still look at it as more of a phone than anything else. I still have my 4GB 1st generation Nano that I can use for going for a walk and jamming out to the tunes. I guess I still prefer its smaller form fact for holding in my hand as I walk.

The App store is pretty amazing. Cro-mag rally is kick ass. But the SSH client TouchTerm has been a nice addition to the arsenal. Now whenever I am on call I am a few finger clicks away from being securely on the network and fixing the issue at hand.

One thing that I wasn’t quite sure on when Jobs said it was that this would be a player in the mobile gaming market. Seeing as I am addicted to LED Football and Texas Hold ‘em, he’s absolutely right!

iPhone 3G

In case you missed it, Apple had a small announcement today.

Yes, the iPhone 3G was announced with all the features that we expected. Obviously, 3G data speeds which are near WIFI speeds. This is pretty awesome for those that have experienced it. Also, Exchange support with push email and calendars. Better iWork and M$ office support. And an app store with a ton of sweet apps.

All I need now is an ssh or terminal application for the iPhone 3G and I WILL be picking one of these babies up.

And the best part of it is, they dropped the price to $199. That’s right, 1/2 off! Now I have a couple of months to wait until my contract is up with Sprint, but I can’t wait to drop them and move to AT&T to give this thing a try.
