My dog the mobster?

My wife and I woke up this morning to a rather gruesome scene in our front yard. At some point in the night, a rabbit got whacked in the front lawn.

Now, I’m not 100% sure if my dog was involved but I have a suspicion that she was behind the hit. She was with us the whole time so I know that it wasn’t her taking out the rabbit. But she has a hate for all critters. So somewhere along the lines, I’m pretty sure she made the arrangement for the “accident” to happen.

Or…there is the possibility that maybe the raccoons are sending her a message.

Either way, I’m keeping a closer eye on her and the dogs she hangs out with. I may be next!

A storm is coming…

Do you ever get to a point where you know that you are about to go on wicked run, but aren’t sure where it is you are going to go?

I’m at that point. The last time this happened I programmed for 16 of 24 hours and came up with a pop3 proxy that could check for spam, viruses, apply certain actions based on the results and do various account verification and logging. This was just a proof of concept all written in PHP.

Yeah, I said it. I was crazy enough to write a pop3 proxy in PHP. Oh, I’m sure that many of you are thinking, well hell, anyone can do that with the PEAR modules. Nah, too easy. I wanted to truly see how this stuff was going to work so I wrote it all from scratch. All in under 1,000 lines of code too.

I feel like another one of these code storms is coming. I’m never sure when they are going to pop up on the old radar. Its not like I slack off all the other times. Its just one of those feelings I get from time to time where it is time to close off the rest of the world and get lost in the bits.

I’m not sure what is gong to come out of this. Its either going to be a new customer portal for work. Or I’m going to knock out all the PHP->MPS (Micro@oft Provision System) code that I need to do. Or it could be one of my other projects that are currently floating around my head.

Either way, its going to be a fun ride.

George W. Bush’s lost e-mails

There has been a lot reported about the Bush administration’s missing email issue. The main details are this. A 1993 court decision stated that emails fell under the Presidential Records Act which requires the president to preserve documents related to the performance of his official duties. Seems pretty reasonable that the White House should keep a record of every email that is sent.

The Clinton Administration answered this decision by adding an archiving system to their Lotus Notes email system.

The issue happened when the Bush administration decided to upgrade the email system from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange. The Exchange system was apparently incompatible with the old archiving system and they were unable to automatically archive email. And this is where I have a huge problem with the way that IT is run in the White House.

To me, if I was running this project, the first thing that I would do is gather the requirements of the platform. It would seem to me that FEDERAL LAW has mandated that an archive is kept of all emails. So if the new system that I am rolling out is not meeting all the requirements, the migration should have stopped. This is a show stopper requirement that should have stopped the cut over.

Why in the hell did they continue with the roll over? Its freaking insane!

If I did that at my job and rolled out a system that delivered less functionality than the current platform, I’d be let go in pretty short order.

Let’s have a moment of silence for the ribs:

A brake fire sparked a massive barbecue on Interstate Highway 80 near Hazel Crest early Wednesday, when a truck hauling 25 tons of beef ribs went up in flames, state police said.

The semitrailer truck was traveling east on I-80 about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and was exiting onto southbound Interstate Highway 294 when a fire started in the braking system, igniting a blaze that consumed the trailer, said Master Sgt. David Bird of the Illinois State Police. The driver escaped unharmed.

The trailer was loaded with 50,000 pounds of beef ribs, Bird said. He could not say what cut of ribs they were, but said, “There was no sauce.”

The trailer burned down to its metal frame, Bird said. No citations were issued.
